Antje Lina Klover was born December 18, 1862 in Lammertsfehn, Ostfriesland, Germany to Gerd Jacobs Clover and Anna Margaretha Janssen Thomssen.
She married Julius Robert “John” Büttner.
Julius’ Federal Naturalization Record (Declaration of Intention), stated that he is 58 years old, a farmer, with a fair complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. He was born in Zirke Germany on September 19, 1861. His current address is listed as box 161, Rossville, Maryland. He immigrated to Baltimore and arrived on March 13, 1891. The document is dated December 8, 1919.
I found a Julius Robert Büttner Jr., who is his son, but there is an ‘e’ in his name. I found out that the German letter ü with the two dots (called an umlaut), can be replaced by using the digraph ue The Petition for Naturalization for Julius Robert Buettner, Jr. shows he was born April 6, 1885 in Rottenberg Germany and emigrated to the US on July 17, 1891 and arrived in Baltimore on the vessel Dresden on August 1, 1891. There is a photo of him to the right, taken in 1919. His October 27, 1909 Petition for Naturalization he is listed as a laborer and resides at 1322 Columbia Avenue in Baltimore. His 1918 World War I Draft Registration states that he is 33 years old, lives at 127 N. Bradford Street and is an insurance agent for Home Insurance Co. at 140 W. Fayette Street in Baltimore. He spells his last name Buettner. He is married to Carrie Blanche Virginia Wentz. They married on December 24, 1913 and had three children:
- Robert Julius Buettner. 1917–1992
- Blanche Buettner, 1918–1918

Her husband Julius Robert Buettner, Sr., is buried there also. It lists his birth as September 1861 in Germany and he passed away February 21, 1934 in Maryland.

There is a passenger list for the SS Dresden leaving the port of Bremen arriving July 28, 1891 in the port of Baltimore listing Anna Buttner, age 28, Julius age 6 and Anna age 4.
The 1930 Census shows Anna Buttner as the head of household, age 67 and widowed, immigrated 1890; son Gerhardt age 25 and born in Maryland, working as a farm hand on a truck farm; Gerhardt’s wife Ava age 17; Gerhardt and Ava’s son Carville age 2 months. They lived on Philadelphia Road.
Very interesting note: Hilda Zink talked about the ‘Bittner’ family that lived near Henry and Lena Bethke’s farm, and that the Bittners (Büttners!) was the family that young Lena Bethke lived with when she first arrived in America. The 1930 Census lists Henry Bethke on the line right before Anna Buttner, which confirms that they were neighbors on Philadelphia Road. Anna Buttner was Lena Bethke’s aunt.
In 1913, Alvena Buttner married Ernest Uebersax (emigrated from Switzerland June 8, 1906), who owned the Uebersax bakery in Baltimore (Hilda talked about the bakery and the family and bought their bakery items there), which was later named Fenwick Bakery. They had a son named Walter, born in 1917, a daughter named Eleanor, born February 2, 1914; Werner, born 1919; Edward born 1927, and Marta born 1931. Read their story on the Fenwick Bakery website.
Anna and Julius; daughter Margaret A, was named Anna Margaret married William Klein and had Charles Edward Klein (1910 in Maryland) and Ellsworth R Klein (1915 in Maryland). William died in 1941.
In 1924, Anna Margaret married Joseph L. Diven (born in Maryland May 7, 1881) and they had three children. A 1928 directory lists Joseph as a foreman living at 312 White Ave.
The 1940 Census lists Joseph and Anna with James Diven age 27, and two stepsons, Charles Klein age 30 (attorney) and James Klein (Ellsworth?) age 25 (clerk at Social Security).
The 1950 Census lists Joseph and Anna as having 6 foster children, ranging from age 5 to 13 — two sisters, a brother and sister, and two sisters. Joseph was 69 years old and a routeman in the dairy industry. Address: 3017 Brendan Avenue.
Coincidentally, Lena Bethke listed Joseph Diven as a cousin and as the person who she was going to meet once she arrived in Baltimore from Germany.
