Anke Mena Klover

Anke Mena Klover was born May 26, 1860 to Gerd Jacobs Clover and Anna Margaretha Janssen Thomssen in Firrel.

She married Harm Gronewold on October 23, 1880 in Filsum.

In a letter written in 1985 from Anna Wells (Gretje Klover’s daughter) to Hilda, Anna wrote that Anke and her sister Lena Klover were very close. Anke’s daughter Margaretha’s two sons had a Grocery Market in Brooklyn New York. Whenever she came visiting she went to work in New York, made money enough for a free trip. That was years ago and maybe he heard same thing about that. They do get good salarys, but a lot is taken out. I do know none of them have a lot of money. My brother was here twice for a 4-week visit..

Anke lived in Rotenburg on the Elbe River, according to Anna de Riese Wells.

Anke and Harm had the following children:

  • Margaretha, Feb 1, 1881 in Lammertsfehn (died Oct 9, 1934)

Harm Gronewold was the son of Dirk Teessen from Filsum and Margarethe Johanna Zimmermann from Nortmoor.

Margaretha married Gustav Rohrs, who was born July 23, 1876 in Schmolau, Sachsen, Prussia, Germany and died Dec 15, 1927.
His residence was 1908 Zeppelin Strasse 3, Rotenburg (Wumme). His mother was Margareth Rohrs.

Children:

  • Gustav, born 1902 – Dec 5, 1959
  • Herman Rudolf, born 1904
  • Tillie Rohrs, born 1906
  • Theodor Hans Fritz Rohrs, born in Rotenburg Dec 9, 1908; married 1937 in Queens; died Sept 7, 1975

Gustav Jr.’s 1936 Petition for Naturalization showed his address as 1157 74th St., Brooklyn, NY and that he was born in Rotenburg, Germany 9/11/1902, and emigrated from Bremerhaven April 30, 1928 on Dresden. He planned to meet with Karl Ardler c/o John Shermann, Hoyt Estate, Darien Connecticut. His wife, Erna Lorenz, was born in Berlin, April 23, 1908; died May 9, 2006 in Brooklyn.

Erna entered the US on July 30, 1928 and married Gustav on May 7, 1929 in Manhattan, NY. They had a child, Gus, on Dec 15, 1931.

Margaretha must have visited her sons, since there is a record of a 25 Sep 1958 travel departure from NY to Rotterdam. (Need to double check this, as her date of death was 1934)

Theodor emigrated on Nov 11, 1930 and served in WWII 1943 – 1945.
His wife was Therese Margaret and they lived at 8402 – 4 Ave. Brooklyn.
Theodor was listed as partner and store manager of the Lorenz Delicatessen on 5111 7th Avenue. This must be the grocery store where Anka Mena worked when she came for a visit from Germany.

The 1940 census shows he is 31 and she is 33 – no children listed.
