Howard Wells

Howard Wells was born June 26, 1870 in Baltimore and married Anna de Riese on October 10 1926 in Baltimore. They were the parents of Nancy (married Garth Jensen), who did a great amount of genealogy work, and Mary Jane (born October 29 1927 in Baltimore).
Nancy Jensen wrote in a letter to Hilda Zink that Howard Wells’ grandfather, John Wells, was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England.

Nancy has a cousin Olga, who is Anna Wells’ brother’s daughter.

Nancy’s father’s great-grandparents are buried in the Baltimore Cemetery, at the end of North Avenue.

Nancy’s 1982 letter to Hilda Zink says that she discovered that her great great grandparents were married on October 26, 1809 at an evangelical Reformed Church in Frederick Maryland. (This would have to be on Nancy’s father’s side – the Wells family). Nancy said she found this out at the Minneapolis Historical Society in St. Paul.

The Wells wharf is at the end of Warren Street, on the southwestern side of the basin.

Nancy states in a 1993 letter that so many of her father’s family lived in the Fells Point area of Baltimore City in the mid to late 1800s.

In the 1880 Census, he is 10 years old and living on Stiles Street in Baltimore City with his father, Thomas Wells (a machinist) and mother, Mary Wells, and brother Thomas, age 7. Thomas Wells was born in Maryland, and his parents were born in England.

In the 1850 Census, John Wells (Thomas’ father) is living in Baltimore City with his wife Jane, both age 44. They were both born in England. John is a machinist. All of their children were born in Maryland. They have the following living at their home:

Jane Wells passed away on 27 Apr 1871 and is buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore City. John Wells passed away on 5 Feb 1870 and is buried at the same cemetery.

The 1910 Census shows Howard Wells, age 40 and wife May, age 40, living on York Road. His occupation is an agent at the IRS.

The 1920 Census shows Howard and May living on Patterson Park Avenue in Baltimore City. Howard’s occupation is Deputy Collector for the IRS.
